Mr. Bergman received his real estate license in 1967 and in 1969 was named the salesman of the year in California while working for a residential company in Millbrae. In late 1970, John opened his own office and by 1973 he had 8 offices and over 300 agents working for Bergman & Associates Realtors.

In 1974, Mr. Bergman formed 7 separate companies all related to real estate under Bergman Enterprise Inc. Each company focused on a different aspect of the real estate business; property management, seminars, 2 investment syndication companies, mortgage brokerage, escrow, and sales. Mr. Bergman took his companies across the nation buying and managing investment properties of all sorts.

Mr. Bergman was one of the original founders of Founders Title Company and sat as a board member for 9 years. Founders became the largest title company in Northern California before it was sold to Old Republic. Mr. Bergman sold an idea to Century 21 real estate in 1970 called "One Call Does it All" as a relocation concept that put Century 21 on the map as the world's largest residential real estate company.

The Bergman companies were sold in 1987 and John moved to Napa Valley and began writing articles about vineyards and the wine business. The response was so great that he became the go-to man for individuals interested in purchasing vineyard and winery estate properties in Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Counties.
