SAN DIEGO, CA, February 26, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In an interview with Business Review Australia, Rod Varney of Leighton Contractors and Project Director of the Gold Coast University Hospital Station Shell project discusses structural innovations, safety measures and the effect the Queensland flooding had on the project.
The Gold Coast University Hospital Station Shell project consists of a cover-style structure, an underground rapid transit station as well as new road pavement, footpaths, bus bays, lighting and signals. Utilizing a top-down method of construction, the project teams built the surface-level elements first before beginning the underground work.
The creation of the underground transit station involved the excavation of the site. According to Rod Varney, project manager of the Gold Coast University Hospital Station Shell project, this involved the installation of piling, capping beams and precast concrete units to support the roof while providing space for the rapid transit line. In addition to the excavation, part of the project entailed relocating and protecting existing public utility lines and ensuring that traffic remained uninterrupted during the construction process.
