Halton Hills faces significant growth pressures, which includes overcoming a water source derived predominantly from groundwater sources. The town's 55,000 inhabitants are ahead of their neighbors in one way, however.

With an ambitious Green Plan in place, Halton Hills plans on becoming a Canadian leader in sustainable initiatives, and owes much of the thanks to Mayor Rick Bonnette.

"In 2007, I couldn't pick up any national newspaper without an article about global warming," Bonnette says. "I handpicked a broad-based public taskforce to tackle this challenge.

"The entire idea for this sustainable push was based on the old expression 'Think globally, act locally.'"
